And Alito makes Five

David Bernstein (who spoke at our school for FedSoc once last year) has a post over at The Volokh Conspiracy noting that if Alito is confirmed that would make a majority of the Court Catholic. Very interesting, seeing as how not that long ago everyone was scared JFK would be taking orders from the Vatican. Even more interesting, ALL FIVE would make up the conservative end, from Kennedy in the middle to Scalia/Thomas on the right. So almost every time a 5-4 decision is right, it will be 5 Catholics v 2 Protestants and 2 Jews. So it seems the mostly Protestant Christian Right has made it's peace with Catholicism. Maybe Mormons are next? Orrin Hatch should get Stevens seat. =P

Introducing Family to His Church

I wish I had a sure fire way to help you introduce your family to His gospel. I have two families, my birth family to which I was born a member and my adopted family of which I am the only member. Families can be the hardest to bring to His word because they already "know" you, which means they know all the mistakes we've made and thus a stranger's testamony is taken as more valuable. The best is to live the gospel and BE an example to them while also encouraging them to participate in any activities the your ward offers such as Halloween Night, pot luck suppers, etc. Also, always offer to say all the prayers at dinner and even if they do not pray, ask for a moment of silence so that you may. When you do your daily gospel reading, do it in a comfortable place such as the livingroom or other common area that again demonstrates your desire to learn His word. I send a daily scripture reading by email to all my family and friends, focusing heavily on the bible but including supporting scripture from the B. of M., D & C, quotes from the Ensign or from the official church website. Sometimes including a personal comment on why the passage for the day is important. Enlist your sister's help now that she has joined the church and invite other members to visit your home, not specificly to work on His word, but so that family can see other members of His church living the gospel by the way the behave. A Monday night "family" home evening can be friends doing an activity at your home that family can be invited to take part in. Hope this helps a bit.
